چکیده

The relative distribution of molecular gas and star formation in galaxies gives insight into the physical processes timescales cycle between stars. In this work, we track spatial configuration CO H$\alpha$ emission at high resolution each our galaxy targets, use these measurements to quantify distributions regions different evolutionary stages formation: from without traced by star-forming gas, HII regions. large sample, drawn Physics High Angular Nearby GalaxieS ALMA narrowband (PHANGS-ALMA PHANGS-H$\alpha$) surveys, spans a wide range stellar mass morphological types, allowing us investigate dependencies gas-star on global properties. At 150 pc, incidence shows dependence Hubble type over radial probed. Massive and/or earlier-type exhibit significant reservoir H$\alpha$, while lower-mass harbor substantial that may have dispersed their birth clouds or formed low-mass, more isolated clouds. Galactic structures add further layer complexity emission. Trends properties are visible only when observed scale is $\ll$ 500 reflecting critical requirement distinguish process.

Spatially resolved star formation histories of nearby galaxies: evidence for episodic star formation in discs

Using long-slit spectroscopy from Moran et al. (2012) we constrain the radial dependence of the recent star formation histories of nearby galaxies with stellar masses greater than 1010M⊙. By fitting stellar population models to the combination of SSFR, D4000 and HγA, we show that the star formation histories of many disk galaxies cannot be accurately represented if their star formation rates de...

The Star Formation Relation in Nearby Galaxies

I review observational studies of the large-scale star formation process in nearby galaxies. A wealth of new multi-wavelength data provide an unprecedented view on the interplay of the interstellar medium and (young) stellar populations on a few hundred parsec scale in 100+ galaxies of all types. These observations enable us to relate detailed studies of star formation in the Milky Way to the z...

Star Formation Histories of Nearby Dwarf Galaxies

Properties of nearby dwarf galaxies are briefly discussed. Dwarf galaxies vary widely in their star formation histories, the ages of their subpopulations, and in their enrichment history. Furthermore, many dwarf galaxies show evidence for spatial variations in their star formation history; often in the form of very extended old populations and radial gradients in age and metallicity. Determinin...

Evolution of Star Forming and Active Galaxies in Nearby Clusters

We have used optical spectroscopy to investigate the active galaxy populations in a sample of 20 nearby Abell clusters. The targets were identified on the basis of 1.4 GHz radio emission, which identifies them as either AGN or galaxies forming stars at rates comparable to or greater than that of the Milky Way. The spectra were used to characterize the galaxies via their emission and absorption ...

Star formation and dust extinction in nearby star forming and starburst galaxies

We study the star formation rate and dust extinction properties of a sample of nearby star forming galaxies as derived from Hα and UV (∼ 2000 Å) observations and we compare them to those of a sample of starburst galaxies. The dust extinction in Hα is estimated from the Balmer decrement and the extinction in UV using the FIR to UV flux ratio or the attenuation law for starburst galaxies of Calze...
